July…A Month for Ice Cream

July…A Month for Ice Cream

Don’t you just love a fun, quirky holiday?  The 4th of July might be over but trust us…the opportunities to celebrate throughout the month are far from over.    July is, after all, National Ice Cream Month.  An entire month focused on ice cream? Now that’s our kind of celebration!

Can there really be such a fantastic reason for trying out a delicious new cold creamy flavor every day of this month??  In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.  Did you also know that Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone?  On July 23, 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. However… there is some controversy over this claim because Italo Marchiony, of New York City, filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in cones as early as 1896.

Whether you get it in a cup or in a cone, atop a waffle or in a banana split….in the park, on the back patio or from the ice cream truck in your neighborhood…go ahead, yell it out, we don’t blame you… “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”
